PERMISSION TO TAKE PART IN A HUMAN RESEARCH STUDY
Title of research study: Learning From the News
Principal Investigator: Douglas J. Ahler
Key Information: The following is a short summary of this study to help you decide whether or not to be a part of this study. More detailed information is listed later on in this form. Why am I being invited to take part in a research study? We invite you to take part in a very short survey, which will be used to construct a survey panel, or a group of MTurk Workers who will be recontacted 4 times after this between now and January to take part in longer, higher-reward surveys to determine more about what people learn from the news/media.
What should I know about a research study?
· This document will explain the research study to you.
· Whether or not you take part is up to you.
· You can choose not to take part.
· You can agree to take part and later change your mind.
· Your decision will not be held against you.
· You can ask all the questions you want before you decide.
Why is this research being done?
We hope to learn more about what people learn from the information presented in the mass media, e.g., in the news on TV, in newspapers, survey reports, etc. The study will help researchers to better understand how mass media can shape people’s knowledge, attitudes, and behavior.
How long will the research last and what will I need to do?
We expect that you will be in this short survey for no more than 5 minutes. You will be asked to answer roughly 20 simple questions about you. We will use these data to put together a panel study, or a series of surveys sent to the same respondents, which helps us to learn more about change over time.
Is there any way being in this study could be bad for me?
There are no physical or financial risks to participation. This is a survey completed anonymously and online. The most sensitive information that we will ask for will be demographic—your race/ethnicity, gender, age, state, and general political leanings. Were Amazon’s security severely compromised, and my password-protected computer stolen and broken into, there could be some chance that someone could connect you personally to survey responses containing your demographics, a measure of your mathematic ability, or your participation in this study.
Will being in this study help me in any way?
We cannot promise any benefits to you or others from your taking part in this research. However, possible benefits for those selected to participate in the panel study include learning things about what is going on in the news.
What happens if I do not want to be in this research?
Participation in research is completely voluntary. You can decide to participate or not to participate.
Your alternative to participating in this research study is to not participate.
Detailed Information: The following is more detailed information about this study in addition to the information listed above.
Who can I talk to?
If you have questions, concerns, or complaints, or think the research has hurt you, talk to the research team at dahler at fsu dot edu
This research has been reviewed and approved by an Institutional Review Board (“IRB”). You may talk to them at 850-644-7900 or humansubjects@fsu.edu if:
· Your questions, concerns, or complaints are not being answered by the research team.
· You cannot reach the research team.
· You want to talk to someone besides the research team.
· You have questions about your rights as a research subject.
· You want to get information or provide input about this research.
How many people will be studied?
We expect to recruit 2000 people for this initial study, and we expect to recontact 900 people to participate in the panel study.
What happens if I say “yes,” but I change my mind later?
You can leave the research at any time it will not be held against you.
If you decide to leave the study, you will not reach the final screen of the survey, which contains the code for completion of the HIT on MTurk. Thus, if you decide to leave midway through the survey, you will not receive monetary compensation. If you decide not to participate midway through the survey, please be sure to “return” the HIT so that others can complete it and so that your MTurk rating will not be adversely affected by an incomplete HIT.
If you are selected to participate in the panel study, you may leave the research at any time, including between survey waves or during any of the surveys, and it will not be held against you.
What happens to the information collected for the research?
Efforts will be made to limit the use and disclosure of your personal information, including research study records, to people who have a need to review this information. We cannot promise complete secrecy. Organizations that may inspect and copy your information include the IRB and other representatives of this organization.
Data from the panel study will be retained indefinitely after the study for replication and future research. It will be stored on the principal investigator’s password-protected computer. The data could be used for future research studies or distributed to another investigator for future research studies without your additional informed consent. Data from this survey from people not chosen to take part in the panel study will be deleted after the conclusion of the panel study in January 2021.
What else do I need to know?
If you agree to take part in this research survey, we will pay you $0.10, via Amazon Payments through MTurk, for your time and effort. You will only receive compensation if you complete the survey.
If you are chosen to participate in the panel study, you will receive 50 cents for each survey you complete, and some surveys will contain opportunities to earn up to an additional 50 cents.
